Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday

Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday: The Rivalry Is Over, Consumers Won

For bargain hunters on the prowl for the best deal, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are no longer an either-or proposition — and that’s a huge plus for consumers.

“Over the last year, Cyber Monday has caught up to Black Friday,” says Dan de Grandpre, CEO and editor-in-chief of Dealnews.com, an online consumer resource for retail deals.
That’s a game-changer for die-hard Black Friday shoppers, who traditionally pore over ads for both days to plot a strategy to get the best bang for the buck.
Now, with the proliferation of shopping options both in-store and online over the week of Thanksgiving, Black Friday — the Friday after Thanksgiving — and Cyber Monday — the Monday that follows — seem more like overlapping bookends.
“These days, consumers don’t care whether you call it Black Friday or Cyber Monday — all they care about is the price,” says Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group. “And retailers — increasingly having to grab consumers’ attention during Thanksgiving leisure time — are now so willing to be flexible and move these deal dates around, they don’t seem to care what you call these days either.”
That means consumers may have more opportunities to snag a good deal, and they may be able to pick whether they want to be a night owl, and stake out retailers opening at midnight on Black Friday; or an early bird, and awake before dawn; or eschew the entire thing, and go shopping in their pajamas from their computer at home.
If you’re on the fence, consider this:
1. Retailers have committed to higher quality deals on Cyber Monday. “As recently as three years ago, Black Friday — dominated by Big Store brands — was clearly better than smaller brand-focused and clothing-focused Cyber Monday, in terms of the number and quality of deals, as well as the number of participating retailers,” says de Grandpre of DealNews.
But research conducted by Dealnews reveals that last year Black Friday had only five percent more deals than Cyber Monday did, a drop of five percent from the prior year. Clearly, the deal-gap is closing, which levels the playing field.
2. Range of discounts on both days has become very similar. It’s true that discounts on Black Friday and Cyber Monday do vary, because retailers can manipulate pre-discount pricing, and because the margins on electronic items differ from those on clothing. Nevertheless, the range of discounts is pretty much identical, says de Grandpre, generally from about 30 percent to as much as 75 percent. “More typically, you see maximum discounts at about 50 percent, less for computers and appliances,” he says.

3. Brick-and-mortar and online retailers are fueling each other’s sales.Smart retailers are increasingly unifying their physical and online stores.
“There’s some form of integration between those two channels, whether it’s in terms of language, promotions or pricing,” says Paco Underhill, CEO ofEnvirosell, a retail-focused research and consulting firm.
Underhill, author of "Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping," notes that a retailer’s online presence allows consumers to gather information about promotions, go into a brick-and-mortar store to examine and handle the product, and then either buy it in store or online at a later date.
4. More people are now buying online. Nearly 68 percent of retailers polled say they expect online sales to grow at least 15 percent or more compared with last holiday season, according to Shop.org’s eHoliday survey. And, saysthe National Retail Federation, the average shopper plans to do about 36 percent of their holiday shopping online this year, up from 32.7 percent in 2010.
Also, adds de Grandpre of DealNews, five years ago, people weren’t so comfortable entering their credit-card numbers. But many shoppers started with small-value purchases, such as books, and worked their way up to larger-value buys.
5. Black Friday deals are now often available online on Thursday. Very few retailers’ brick-and-mortar stores are open on Thanksgiving, though there are some, but shopping at their online counterparts on Thursday is a big option.
“The vast majority of items you’d want to buy in store on Friday at the big-box retailers are available at the stroke of midnight on Thursday, with slightly different pricing, with more postings added gradually,” says de Grandpre.

Shoppers have lots of ways to check and compare these deals with websites such as Dealnews, www.blackfriday.us, andwww.theblackfriday.com, and Black Fridayshopping applications on mobile phones. These sites and apps often post leaked Black Friday ads ahead of time, giving shoppers an opportunity to compare deals.
6. Many retailers are now doing good promotions early in the week.“Many promotions — which can be as qualitative as those found on Black Friday — can begin as early as Tuesday,” says de Grandpre. “It’s now really a whole week of retail marketing,” he says, calling these opportunities “Black Friday-quality deals.”
The blurring of language — retailers’ using “Black Friday” to describe deals that happen on days other than the day after Thanksgiving — makes Black Friday less about one day of the year and more about a deal’s perceived value.
And it gets even more confusing when retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores[WMT  56.89    0.25  (+0.44%)   ] kick-off the shopping event at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving day, with deals rolling out over the course of several hours.
The push-up doesn’t only apply to Black Friday. This year, says NPD's Cohen, about 25 percent of retailers will start Cyber Monday deals earlier than its designated day as well. “Two years ago it started on Monday, last year on Saturday, and this year it will likely start Friday,” he says.

7. Doorbusters are no longer in store only. “For the last several years, Walmart, Best Buy [BBY  25.63    -0.08  (-0.31%)  ]Staples [SPLS  13.68    -0.17 (-1.23%)   ] and a handful of major Big Box retailers have made extremely limited numbers of doorbusters — traditionally the hallmark of Black Friday — available both in-store and online on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” says de Grandpre of DealNews. Those numbers are increasing. Last year, for Black Friday, Target[TGT  51.21    -0.32  (-0.62%)   ] offered doorbusters online for the first time.
Black Friday online deals resonate with consumers. “I’d rather buy something online because I’ll know instantly if I’ve gotten it or not,” says Cohen of NPD, who notes that scoring a Black Friday deal online makes it unnecessary to wait until Cyber Monday. “And if consumers can net a doorbuster online, they won’t have to turn up in store.”
8. Coupons fuel both in-store and online sales. It’s not unusual for retailers, who are keen to drive traffic to their brick-and-mortar stores, to provide consumers who shop online with a coupon to be used in store, generally within a certain time period, says Cohen. He adds, shoppers typically buy more inside a physical store than they do online. The outcome is that retailers wind up promoting both Black Friday and Cyber Monday offerings, without playing favorite.
The main takeaway is that with a little research, consumers can find deals on the products they want, and they may not have to fight the crowds on Black Friday to get it.
Retailers “want to beat each other to the punch, because it’s all about who gets there first,” says Cohen.
And that’s good news for consumers, any day of the week.

Best Cyber Monday Deals

The Best Cyber Monday Deals

Reports of Black Friday violence and pepper-spraying may have made some holiday shoppers wary of hitting the mall this year. Luckily, there are some great Cyber Monday deals that don't require you to leave the house.
Like many of the brick-and-mortar retailers offering Black Friday sales this year, many Cyber Monday retailers are allowing customers to shop the deals early before the actual online shopping holiday. Others, however, are staying tight-lipped about their deals until the day before, so MainStreet rounded up some of the best Cyber Monday sales that retailers are pushing in 2011.

Wal-Mart
The world's largest retailer tried to lure consumers to its doors first by kicking off Black Friday sales on Thursday. Its Cyber Monday sales are also beginning a day early. Wal-Mart will begin its "Cyber Week" sales with deals on gadgets, toys and home goods. Shoppers will be able to scoop up 32-inch Toshiba LCD HDTVs for $249 and Xbox holiday gamer bundles for $319. Tramontina Dutch ovens will be offered for $35 and Hot Wheels Mega Garage Playsets will be $25. The site will offer free shipping on orders of more than $45, on qualifying products.

Toys "R" Us
The toy superstore plans to roll out discounts on thousands of items on its website, starting at 6 p.m. Sunday. Shoppers will be able to get 60% off the cost of certain video game titles with the purchase of another game. Calico Critters' products will be 50% off, while certain Nerf products will be up to 40%. Perennial favorites such as Little Tikes Bouncers and Razor Scooters will be discounted by 30%. Prices on Easy-Bake Ovens and Power Rangers action figures will be cut by 20%. Barbie dolls will sell for $15 less, while Hot Wheels cars will be offered for $10 off. Consumers will get free shipping on orders of at least $49.

Macy's
The department store plans to offer discounts on hundreds of items on its website. For the home, shoppers will find Dyson DC-17 Total Clean vacuums for $349.99 and 24-piece bedding sets for $99.99. The store will offer buy-one-get-one-free deals on certain women's sweaters and 50% off of select women's coats. In accessories, handbag prices will be cut by 25% to 40%, while Charter Club leather gloves and cashmere scarves will be 50% off. Macy's will also lower its minimum order for free shipping to $75, using the promotional code "CYBER."

Sam's Club
Sam's Club, not to be outdone by sister store Wal-Mart, has some Cyber Monday deals to rival Wal-Mart. The shopping club has an Asus i5 Notebook for $479 with free shipping. The TV deals have been great this year at every retailer, and Sam's Club has a Magnavox 32-inch LCD HDTV for $248.88 with free shipping.
You have to be a member of the shopping club to get the deals, but you can score an annual membership for as little as $40 The deals start at 10 p.m. Sunday and last until Dec. 2.

Costco
Bulk retailer Costco plans to offer deals on everything from jewelry to coffee during its Cyber Monday sale. Shoppers will be able to buy computers for up to $500 off, Brother and Hewlett-Packard printers for up to $120 off and iPad accessories for as much as $30 off. Costco will cut the price of the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball vacuum by $100 and the Maytag washer/dryer set by $500. Certain sheets, robes and gift baskets will be discounted by $10 to $25. Non-members must pay a surcharge to make purchases on the site.

Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble has really amped up the deals it's offering to members this year, and its Cyber Monday deals reflect that. The book retailer is giving 25% off of one item purchased online to members. This means that members could use that one-time 25% discount to pre-order the new Nook Color e-reader, normally $249, for less than $200. Barnes & Noble will also offer select DVD and Blu-ray movies for up to 80% off.

Microsoft
The software maker is offering discounts on computers, accessories and video games through Monday on its website. The company is offering a Samsung RC512 Core i5 laptop for $499, down from $799. They're cutting the price of their Xbox gaming bundles by $200 and selling their Kinect Sensors for $99.99. Certain Xbox games are on sale for $20 off and prices on many computer accessories have been cut by 25%.

Amazon.com
Starting at midnight on Sunday, the online powerhouse will begin sales on gadgets, toys, home goods and jewelry. Along with its $79 Kindle and $199 Kindle Fire, Amazon is offering a Sony Cybershot 10.2-megapixel camera for $199 (a savings of $150), a Microsoft Xbox 360 holiday bundle that includes Fable III and Halo Reach for $199 ($100 off), and TechnoMarine watches for 40% off. Sweaters and fleece clothing will be discounted by up to 60%. The site is also cutting the price of Hasbro games and VTech electronic toys by 50%. "Twilight" DVDs will be on sale for $6.99.

Target
Wal-Mart's biggest rival will be rolling out its own week of sales during its "Cyber Week." The discount chain is cutting prices of clothing and home goods by more than 50%, and toys by 30% to 50%. In particular, Target is offering $100 in free accessories when you buy a Sony Tablet S for $499.99, and discounts of more than 30% on other gadgets. Shoppers can also pick up stocking stuffers such as buy-one-get-one-free Pillow Pets and $3.99 DVDs.

Online Shopping Directory
Luxury Brands and More Variety

Luxury Brands Available Online
There are amazing websites in the US that give you access to the latest designs from top brands and in almost all sizes.  There are different types of websites and each type provides a different benefit.

Five types of websites:

1.  Brand Owner

2.  High End Department Store

3.  Private Sale

4.  Public Fashion Liquidator

5.  Category Aggregator

1. Brand Owner Fashion Websites

Brand Owner sites are those that feature the entire line of current season products, in all sizes & colors, and if selling will only list at full retail price. There is typically no savings but the exact in season style, color, and size can be found in stock. Some brand owners though will not sell direct on their website.
Our favorites:

  • Louis Vuitton www.louisvuitton.com
  • Chanel www.chanel.com
  • True Religion Jeans  www.truereligionbrandjeans.com
  • Moschino www.moschinoboutique.com
  • Nike www.nike.com
  • Tiffany www.tiffany.com
  • Victoria's Secret   www.victoriassecret.com

2. High End Department Store Websites

High End Department Store websites aim to provide the in-store shopping experience, online. The benefit of this type of website is that it provides multiple top brand choices in one place for easier comparison shopping and selection. Typically though, the Brand Owner's entire style range, colors, and sizes are not available. It features only part of each brand's styles. Can find periodic modest sales at around 10% to 30% discount if the item is from a prior season collection or clearance.
Our favorites:

  • Neiman Marcus   www.neimanmarcus.com
  • Saks Fifth Avenue   www.saksfifthavenue.com
  • Bergdorf Goodman   www.bergdorfgoodman.com
  • Nordstrom   www.nordstrom.com

3. Private Sale Fashion Websites

Private Sale sites are considered the ultimate in top end fashion at the lowest price, as much as 80% discount.   Quantities are limited and sell-outs are common. You must first be invited by a current member or request access from the site directly in order to register on their website to enter the site and shop.  These typically require a US mailing address to register as a member.
Our favorites:
  • Gilt   www.gilt.com
  • Rue La La   www.ruelala.com
  • Ideeli   www.ideeli.com

4. Public Fashion Liquidator Websites

Are you looking for a wide range of popular fashion merchandise at reasonable prices? Well, look no further than great public fashion liquidator sites which focus on providing both wide brand choice and wide styles, sizes, and inventory availability. Savings can typically be 30% to 50% discount.

  • Revolve Clothing   www.revolveclothing.com
  • Bluefly   www.bluefly.com

5. Category Aggregator Websites

Are you looking for one site that has all brands and all sizes and colors of a specific product? Well there are some products that have so many different brands and variations that aggregator sites have been started to give the consumer access to everything in that product category. The benefit of these types of sites is that you can almost always find what you want. The problem is that the items are typically sold at full price or with not more than a 10% or 20% discount. The more varieties of the product, the more useful a site like this becomes. For example, shoes is one of the product categories which has among the most different brands, models, sizes, and colors. As such, several shoe focused websites have been started to help consumers sort through all the shoes in the world.

Multi category massive aggregators such as Amazon and eBay can be an exception and provide generally a better price in addition to having many different categories and among the largest choice of products.  Many 3rd party sellers on Amazon and also US eBay merchants will only ship to your pesonalized US mailing address which you can get from XBShip.com.

ATG Stores is super massive aggregator we are evaluating at the moment and we have made some purchases from them.  ATG Stores runs about a hundred websites and each is focused on a particular home goods category such as Outdoor Patio Furniture or ceiling lights.  Then what they have done is located hundreds of manufacturers that sell those products and arranged direct deals with those wholesalers and manufacturers.  So, the choice within the category is very deep (for example, ten thousand different types of ceiling lights for the home) and the pricing also is very good.

Our favorites:
  • Zappos   www.Zappos.com (All shoes)
  • ShoeBuy   www.shoebuy.com (All shoes)
  • Amazon   www.amazon.com (A multi-category  aggregator, has many things.  Offers items also from 3rd party sellers who usually only ship to the US mailing address-- you can get one from XBShip.com)
  • eBay   www.ebay.com (A multi-category  aggregator, has all things, including used items at very low prices.  Again, many of the eBay sellers do not ship internationally, so it is usually easier and less costly to just send it to the US mailing address-- you can get one from XBShip.com)
  • Cabellas   www.cabellas.com (Professional outdoor equipment and apparel for the rugged lifestyle)
  • REI   www.rei.com (The most professional camping and outdoor equipment and apparel, at full price)
  • Sierra Trading Post www.sierratradingpost.com (Some great prices and sales on camping equipment and apparel)
  • Best Buy   www.bestbuy.com (the largest for computers &  electronics)
  • B&H Photo   www.bhphotovideo.com (The largest online seller of professional camera equipment in the world)
  • Overstock.com www.overstock.com (combination  of general merchandise liquidator and multi category  aggregator
  • Sports Authority  www.sportsauthority.com (A leading large national US retail chain exclusively focused on sporting equipment, sports apparel, and sporting shoes.  Has almost everything for outdoor sports and working out.  Typically at full price but has weekly sales and discounts.)
  • ATG Stores www.atgstores.com (Then, at the bottom of their home page, click on the More Stores link.  This takes you to about 100 websites ATG Stores runs, all focused on home decor).
